Caring for Your Leather

Leather Care

Store your leather gear out of sunlight, preferably in a cool environment. If well kept, our product will serve you for many years. Our selected leathers age beautifully.

Dry and warm air will dry out the leather if it is not regularly treated.

The leather may leak some dye for the first times it is being used. This is normal and nothing to be concerned about. White garments, furs or the like should however be kept away from dark leather in particular.

Cleaning

Wipe with damp cloth or sponge after a sweaty session. If necessary, use a mild saddler’s soap in moderation (for example Carr & Day & Martin, Stassek, or similar product) with a damp sponge. Remove all excess soap from stitches and seams with a clean, damp sponge. If the leather starts to feel dry, apply a very small amount of leather oil or balsam after cleaning with a saddle soap. A good trick is massaging the oil or balsam into the leather with your fingertips -warmth helps the leather absorb the conditioning product. Damp leather will absorb conditioning products more easily. You can also opt for beeswax, coconut fat or similar product.

Use oil and balsam with some caution, as it can not be removed from leather. Too frequent applying of oil or balsam will leave a permanent, slimy feel. Items that take a heavy weight, such as suspension products, should not be oiled too often to avoid softening the leather too much, as this can eventually cause stretching.

Leather bits or gags should be rinsed after each use and dried with a soft towel.

The Do Nots

Do not use coarse sponges as these can scratch the leather. Products may alter the color of leather -always test on a small area first.

For safety reasons we do not recommend that you repair your own leather items.

Remember that leather is skin, and will burn under flame. Fire can cause irreversible damage to leather. Same goes for radiators -do not store or stash your leather gear near a source of excess warmth.

We do not recommend using cleaning or car interior leather care products or the like, as these often contain solvents or other chemicals.
